He's the blond kid with the yellow belt.

Posted some pre-shoot questions and a few results in the Open Talk section. This was actually a lot of fun and I'd do it again. Lighting was good, I can imagine struggling under different circumstances. The Minolta 80-200/2.8 and LA-EA5 on the 7M4 did a great job, but in retrospect it was too long for shooting next to the ring. I had to sit back too far, which allowed people to walk between me and the subjects. I would've been well served with a 24-70 or 28-75. I had the 24-105 with me but didn't want to lose the stop. I think this may have been a good spot for a 50/1.7 or so prime. I'm going to do some testing at his lessons and see how it goes. All in all though a good experience and I'm happy with the outcome, especially for a first-stab.

Tim good job on these I think you would have been fine with a f4 lens lighting looks clean and a reasonable level.

Pretty much shows that the endless fussing over new lenses (myself included) is mostly pointless. Which we already know, but we keep fussing anyway...

Nice work mate. 😊

Wow, these higher ISO's look crazy clean!

Thanks. You're probably right, but I couldn't tell by looking at the screen or in the EVF and didn't want to risk it since I was already up at ISO 8k. A whole stop would've put me at or near ISO 16k. I'm still not confident shooting like that.

Thanks. On the other hand, if I only bought what I needed, I wouldn't have any toys!

I am thinking about either a 20-ish to 70-something 2.8, or maybe using a prime. I'm betting my old Minolta 50/1.7 would've been perfectly fine. Whatever I do it will likely be another A-Mount, pretty obvious the right one will do the job just fine. And, since I have the 24-105/4, it wouldn't see more than occasional specific use. Another stop and a half or so would've been nice to have in reserve.

I would go with something like a 24-70 f2.8 to give you the flexibility.

You might be able to get a Tamron 28-75mm for quite cheap, even brand new you would be able to find them for not very much I'd think. The 75mm long end would probably be better for you than 24mm on the wide end. That would be a pretty handy lens as it does do a good of the background too.

As for fussing over lens sharpness, my Tamron 28-200mm really buried that concern once and for all. If I'm shooting at 28-35mm stopped down, I'm at a point where I couldn't care if I had my Sigma 24-70mm, my Sony 16-35mm or the Tamron on the camera, the tiny quality difference (if any) is just not even worth changing the lens in that scenario. Learning what I actually need has really saved me a lot of emotional distress. I haven't even looked at buying a new lens for about two months now..! 😀

24-70, 28-75, whatever I can find used in an A-Mount that isn't too costly. Like I said, minimal use. The wide end is going to be too wide anyway, I think 40-60 will be the sweet spot.

If that 28-200 would hold 2.8 through 60, I'd buy it. I'm probably going to end up with one anyway!

Edited to add:
You know what'd be a perfect lens? That Tamron 35-150/2-2.8!

Oh honeeeyyyyyy!!!!

Found a couple of highly ranked (Dyxum) 28-70-ish/2.8s on eBay in the <$300 range that would probably be good options for this kind of use. I may go to his dojo when he tests for the next belt and try the 24-105 before I spend any more $.
