Feel free to join in with your random 24-105 shots.

Picked this lens up used from MPB last week and hadn't done much with it. With a second sunny afternoon in a row  I decided to go for a walk after work.

Too bad no one else has joined in yet. It is certainly a good general purpose lens, ideal for walk-around with only one lens. I used one in Canon for several years. I don't own one (my only Sony lens is 200-600), but I would like to see other images here.

This doesn't seem to be that kind of place, definitely an anomaly amongst forums. Very few shared photo threads get used, most everyone posts a new thread with each submission.

That is unfortunate. For me it would be much easier to follow a few threads with continuous submissions than to try to read a new thread every time someone goes out and takes photos. I even brought this up with Timothy Mayo, commenting on the usefulness of the birds in flight thread and stating I wish there were more like this. For example, when I used to shoot Canon, there was a thread on CanonRumors for deer and antelope which received ongoing submissions. Maybe we can convince the Sony users here to start doing the same?

I don't know that it even needs to be that specific, just a thread for animals in the wild would work. I think there is one but it doesn't get used much, at least I never see it pop up on the front page. I frequent 4 forums every day and don't really dig deep into any of them. Some of the places I post get upwards of 30 responses, I tend to look through responses and catch up threads more than dig for new posts.

Some forum favorites are a random shot thread, or post a photo related to the one above. Those are always fun.

The few times I've started a new thread here gets the same response as this one did, so I don't really bother. The one exception to this place seems to be birds. Not my forte. If you want to know what I like to shoot, see below. The upcoming racing season will be my first season with a Sony. My main camera for the last few years was a Panasonic G-9.

I bought the 24-105 f4, but primarily for video as it is the only sub medium reach lens that has OSS in
the Sony line up and is a well proven videography/vlogging lens and from my work, the OSS
combined with IBIS on my Ai gives a significant vibration reduction over IBIS only and the lens OSS
switched off.

The stills images I have to date are of good quality although I do see barrel and pin cushion
distortion and vignetteing at wide open and varying degrees across the focal length if uncorrected.
If taking images with straight horizontals or verticals in-camera correction should be "on" with a
degree of post production lightroom clean up as necessary. From 70mm to 105mm seems to
give the best quality images, Autofocus is quick but at close focussing and wide apertures
the image quality is lower but improves upon stopping down.

I like the idea of a thread like this. I have been wondering whether the 24-105 might be a good choice for me. My default lens (ie.the one in the camera most of the time) with my A6500 has been the Sony/Zeiss 16 to 70mm lens, & I'm guessing the 24-105 might be a FF equivalent? Seeing the shots others take with it helps.

The 24-105mm besides being a very useful general shooting focal range and lens also has OSS steady
shot which works well with IBIS to together dampen camera and lens vibration(shake) and accordingly
minimise blur in your shots.

As a 24-105mm owner, I see a noticeable difference when using it with both IBIS and ISS whereas
for most of the current -70mm Sony lenses they do not have OSS and IBIS is supposed to have been
designed to cover the camera shake and lens shake........with some lenses, IBIS alone, is average at best.

As a result of the above OSS/IBIS combination , handholding video is considerably smoother.

In terms of still shooting at f4 the lenses quality of the image is not great, but certainly adequate, but,
it has its limitations for low light shooting....and this is probably the biggest drawback of the lens for travel
and general shooting.

Hope this helps

...I'm guessing the 24-105 might be a FF equivalent? ...
Yes indeed. According to the description on BH Photo, the 16-70 full frame equivalent is exactly 24-105.

How's this for Dynamic Range? Shooting directly into the sun with a ball of fire as the main subject, and you can still read the shady side of a dark truck. If you click the image and go to the flicker page, you can enlarge and make out the faces of the people sitting in the shade. This is a downscaled image to 2500pixels on the long side, the full resolution image is even more impressive.

Good grief! I don't know what to say. I've had a look at the album and have to say, there's quite a few shots that I like better than this one. I'm not an environmental driver by any means, I own a 450BHP supercharged V8 and a V6 300BHP diesel, so I can claim to have created a few emissions myself, but wow! that is a flame thrower, nothing to do with the internal combustion engine. Spectacular and ridiculous simultaneously. Not sure whether I love it, or it makes me want to turn vegan!!!!!!!

That looks like one hell of an event and I'd like to get to it if I have a few more air miles left in me. Location please?

Sorry, I got side tracked, nice shot.

LOL. It was a display at The Detroit Dragway Reunion which has been held annually at Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan for the last 12 years.

This is just a demonstration vehicle for fun. He went up and down the track a few times blasting flames. He owns several cars/trucks that do this, all called 'Sh-Boom'. one of them usually shows up at the Woodward Dream Cruise and other various auto-related events.

I posted it mainly to show the DR. I found it pretty surprising how little had to be done in post to even out the extremes considering the sun is blasting me in the face and is in the shot. Bear in mind too that this thread is for 24-105 shots, not all of the shots in that album are with this lens.

@WeeMalky I recognize some of those as Sevilla. I have been there twice; one of my favorite cities.

Is the Minolta f/3.5-4.5 invited? My budget is mostly type-A right now, ea4 plus Maxxi 24-105D and 100-300Apo D.

Since no one else is using the thread, may as well join in!

Snow is only an occasional thing here. The image is soft because it was snowing lightly.

I'd be grateful for any comments or suggestions about composition, image quality or anything else that stands out for you.

Thanks

I'm late to the party here but I too have the Sony 24-105. Shot all 100+ images in this album if you would care to look.
Jeff, you already posted that link, see post #6. This thread was moved to this forum.

The idea is a forum where people can look at samples and evaluate a lens. Why not pick some of your favorites and post them direct for us to see?

I have a few, already posted some in the posts I have contributed to.

This is a good idea though.

Trying to add some different ones here though!
