I've been hanging around the butterfly bush (name of the plant) at my parents house snapping a few shots of butterflies over the past few days. I'm a novice at identifying species of butterflies but here goes:

First two are of a Black Swallowtail
Next 4 are a Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
Last is a Great Spangled Fritillary

Beautiful.

Have you tried cropping number 5? If it is in sharp-enough focus you should be able to enlarge it quite a lot.

Thanks for the feedback. I know my composition could use a little work and cropping should help that.

Below is a crop of number 5. I had a fairly small depth of field with that shot and it looks like focus point was on the back of the wing. Might also have some motion blur. So there were some limits how much I can crop it and have it look good to my tastes anyway. Feel free to comment on my choice in composition (I’m a novice so always looking to improve).

The editing of the other photos will have to wait since I am getting ready to travel back to Belgium from the US.

It is a pity that the focus is not quite right. Menu 1 has two relevant settings that might have helped: Priority Set in AF-S, and Priority Set in AF-C. The options are AF, Release and Balanced. AF means that the shutter waits until the subject is in focus, which would give the best chance of success. (Release means fire immediately).
Don't be afraid to use a smaller aperture and much higher ISO, especially if you have noise-reduction software.
