Hello all

Using the a6400 and Sony 200-600 what do you find the best minimum and maximum ISO values in your settings for best results? I've been struggling with images in low light.
If anyone can help I really appreciate it

I don't have experience with that lens, but I try to keep my maximum ISO set to 3200 when I'm shooting with my a6400, but really 2500 is as high as I want to go.

Thanks Mate, will give this a try. Does being set to 3200 help in low light?

Well, I usually snap family photos or a few small events for friends and I like to keep it in Aperture priority mode at f2.8 (using Tamron 17-70mm) and a Min ISO of 100 and Max ISO of 3200. If I find that the shutter speed is automatically being set too low I bump my minimum ISO up to 400. I find that our camera does a fine job with ISOs up to 1600. ISO 2000 and above need a bit of de-noise processing, and above 3200 I don't love the results.

I assume from your profile picture that bird and wildlife is your cup of tea? I don't know if my experience helps you any, but good luck!

Hi Mate, yeah 90% Wildlife, and yes you have helped me as I do a little landscape with my smaller lens. Really appreciate your help 🙏📸

Cheers Lee, looking forward to some samples.
Speaking of samples, I think I have some high ISO samples from Christmas that I was going to cull, but I can post them here if you like?

Lee, here are 3 copies of a similar composition with different ISO levels; my father and my daughter :)
Only editing I did was to make white balance consistent across all 3:

  • ILCE-6400
  • E 17-70mm F2.8 B070
  • 34.0 mm
  • Ć’/2.8

  • ISO 1250

  • ILCE-6400
  • E 17-70mm F2.8 B070
  • 34.0 mm
  • Ć’/2.8
  • 1/60 sec
  • ISO 1600

  • ILCE-6400
  • E 17-70mm F2.8 B070
  • 46.0 mm

  • ISO 2500

I think you'll find little difference between 1250 & 1600, but 2500 starts to show some more grain/noise.

Really good images though Mate really like em. I see what you mean at 2500 ISO but still very useable images, that lens is good what brand is it

Bear in mind Chris notes that he did no processing other than white balance. The minor amount of noise in those can easily be cleaned up in post, provided you shoot RAW.
