I know there are a few lenses with the new XD Linear motors, like the FE 400 f2.8, FE 24 F1.4 and guessing the FE 35 F1.4. Will my other G-Master lenses keep up with the 30FPS? FE 100-400, FE 70-200, FE 24-70

Solution
You can find Sony's official list of lenses and prerequisites for shooting 30fps with the a1 here:

I don't think 30fps will be used all that often though unless you really enjoy culling, 10fps is plenty for most situations and is typically what I shoot with my a9.
30 fps is a theoretical maximum.
When set to 10 fps on BIF my A9, set on AF priority, often doesn't get there. It does with good light and clear background and then usually only two or three shots are needed anyway.

Apparently, Sony lenses will be fine but third party will be capped at 15fps. Something to do with the driving mechanism.

No one needs 30fps, no one, which is a good job it seems.

Yes. I did use 20 fps for a while and once it produced a shot that 10 wouldn't have but culling made the eyes bleed.

I watched ryan mense user review quite honest ,went out to shoot some birds for a few hours came back with near 5k of images so 30 fps is overkill ,but it does have a purpose bird taking flight or landing it would be just nice to switch from 30 to 10 when you press a button. It really is just spec talk and figures sell cameras do you really need 61 mp for the majority of people no .If you are going to shoot 30fps be well prepared for a lot time on pc culling images or employ some one to do it for you.

It's important to recognise that these are all maximum figures anyway, that you get under ideal circumstances.

Set to AF priority and watch them plummet with eg a bird IF against a busy background.
makes you wonder what is for then but i assume when something is static not moving through your frame ,so habitual stuff like a heron striking for a fish or swallowing it , lions play fighting and you want the exact moment a paw slaps the other one, a whale breaching etc the problem is knowing when to set to 30fps and not to ,and how easy it is to change between high and low settings .with out menu diving

I expect it's like the A9 where fps is set by dial and can be assigned to a custom button.

I used to shoot birds with a Panasonic G9 and that had a video photo mode where you could shoot 6K vid at 30 fps and extract 18 MP jpeg stills. That speed would for example get one of our Rainbow Bee-eaters at the top and bottom of each wing flap and so give you choice of position. With 1/2000s shutter you'd get a bit of wing blur which makes the bird look more realistic than frozen wings do.

been there got the t-shirt although not photographing bee eaters the olympus is even better 60fps raw 20mp,just recently sold my g9 can not make a decision on a9 or another a7r camera ,or wait for a74 common sense says wait for a74

"In Pro Capture mode which uses electronic shutter, the E-M1 II was able to shoot full-resolution images at an astonishing 60.6 frames-per-second no matter the file type, which is truly staggering for the size and resolution of the sensor. And it doesn't appear to be dropping the bit-depth of RAW files as some cameras do in faster electronic shutter modes, as they are still 12 bits. Again, this is with AF and AE locked at the first frame. (Olympus rates Pro Capture mode with continuous AF/AE at 18 fps which is still amazing.) "

Yep. forgot they made it 18 for pro capture that was firmware update, still i soon tired of shooting 18fps c-af let alone 30 or 60 fps but they did come in handy for little birds coming to feeders set manual focus and blast away ,much better than chasing or relying on c-af .still bet that the a1 could do this the processing has become much superior over previous sonys

My D500 offers a setting to lock AWB to the first frame in burst mode that can save work in post. And there are times when locking AE to the first frame will save some shots, but I can never see the point of locking AF to the first frame.
Birds are always moving even if it's just breathing.
PDAF isn't particularly accurate so keeping it trying increases the hit rate.

Not in raw and you also have pre capture 15 frames before you push the shutter ,be nice if sony gave us this feature
Yes that's a feature I really would like from Sony. Definitely on top of my list of wanted features. That and some sort of IC focus stacking.

30 fps can happen only in Release Priority mode it seems.

That'll give you a shitload of soft shots.

Mark Galer has done a detailed review of using it, and that’s not what he found.

The key things you need to achieve 30fps are:
  • File format set to lossy compressed RAW
  • Release priority
Also, you may have some trouble getting all the way to 30fps if you are using a tracking focus mode.

I won’t be reaching 30 because I don’t like lossy compression of RAWs.

One lens which can definitely keep up is the 135mm GM - that is a very fast focussing lens.

That produces soft shots in common conditions in the A9 and A7R III. When set to AF priority in those conditions, the frame rate plummets.

When the demos are of a contrasty moving animal in good light, they can't be extrapolated to other conditions.

There is an authoritative list. I know that the 135mm f/1.8 GM has no trouble keeping up (As it ought, with 4 XD motors driving 2 focus groups).

I think the only GM that doesn’t keep up is the oldest GM prime: the 85mm f/1.4 GM.
