Unfortunately it’s a hook with a bit of line still attached. Something that isn’t too uncommon to see. Thankfully this guy was healthy and the hook will eventually rust and break off.
Most of us carry dive knives to assist any animals caught it fishing line or nets, and to clean any found tangled in the reef.
