Fantastic shots, wish I had a backyard like you.

A few more from last week. Went out this morning to see if I could get some other shots but last week's 10F (-12.2C) with no wind was downright pleasant compared to the 6F (-14.4C) with 15mph (24kph) wind today.

Virginia Rail, lifer bird i got lucky seeing and photographing on last day of 2025. If the 300 with 2x TC can produce results close to this, the 600GM bazooka will go, but i don't know. We'll see soon. Just tired of lugging 600F4 around (no tripod or monopod, just black rapid sling), almost taking the joy out of it but then this Virginia Rail poses for me, almost makes it all worth it.View attachment 81567
I went through my shots as I knew I had a rail shot recently with the 300 f2.8 + the 2x TC. This was taken 15 minutes before sunset. 1/1600 sec @ f7.1 ISO 10,000. I am physically unable to hold the 600 but love my 300 and so nice for birds in flight.

Pearly-Eyed Thrasher (Zorzal Pardo). This guy is very inquisitive to the point that he can be aggressive. He came less than 10 feet from where I was and was looking directly at me. My guess was that he/she had the nest nearby. This was taken with the Sony A7CII and a Canon 70-200 f2.8 using a Sigma converter (MC-11).

Great shot of that swimming rail. I have been using 300 2.8 and 2x TC recently and really like most of the results so far. And yeah returning the joy of walking in nature with it, vs schlepping 600 around.

Some recent shots taken with A1 with 300 2.8 and 2x TC. Finally upgraded my A1 to 4.0 from 1.31, I was a nervous nelly the entire time but it made it. These shots were taken with 1.31, I've noticed some improvements in AF from 1.31 because I was a little disappointed with AF with 300 and 2x TC but now on 4.0 I notice its much better.

Those are outstanding shots so yeah, why lug the 600 around when you can get these results with something a fraction of the weight. And so much easier for BIF. I'm hearing more people are ditching the 600 for the 300. I know some people who only own the 300.
