Does combination of “A7R V” & “2x Tele-Converter” & a “70-200 F2.8 GM II”, give excellent results and focussing?

Hello everyone.

I watched your video: “Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM II + 2x Tele VS Sony 100-400 GM AF Comparison” on an “A7RIV”.

I own both lenses (70-200 F2.8 GM II & 100-400 GM), and the “1.4 Tele-Converter”. And the camera I’m using, is an “A7R V”.

After watching your video, I’m trying to figure out, if I should get a “2x Tele-Converter” for my “A7R V” & my “70-200 F2.8 GM II”.

What do you suggest?

Does the combination of an “A7R V” & “2x Tele-Converter” & a “70-200 F2.8 GM II”, give excellent results and focusing, or should I save my money?

Sorry for my English. English is not my native tongue.

The 2x will make the 70-200 f2.8 a 140-400 f5.6 which is less focal range and a higher f stop than the 100-400 you already own. The optical quality of the 2x+70-200 will at best match that of the 100-400 but given that the 2x seems to have less consistent optical quality as the 1.4x it will probably be worse.

What is the goal of getting the 2x?

My 2x has shown me only a few percent loss in IQ with aperture wide open. I bought it to shoot macro stopped down a little and have been far more than impressed with the results it has given me on the 70-200mm f4 GII. Based on my findings I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 2x to someone, but I may have gotten lucky by the sounds of it.

Hello and thanks for your answers ... :)

My intention is to save weight, and still preserve good qualitiy and focus.

Since I own the 1.4x, I will go on with the 1.4x.

I think have to do some serious testing with the 1.4x on my 70-200 GM II, my 100-400 GM and my 200-600 G, AND my A7RV and see how the quality and focus performs and then come to a final conclusion.

Your conclusion will be that the teleconverter doesn't change the focus speed in any noticeable way. The image quality will be best with the 70-200 and worst with the 200-600, no difference than the quality without the TC. Personally I find using a TC gets kind of cumbersome at times and it is just easier to change lenses than add and remove the TC.

Your real question is the same that most of us have. When I travel what combination of lenses will I need or might need and how much weight do I want to carry with me?

Obviously I can't answer that for you. Generally I have a good understanding of the focal ranges I might use during a trip and make the decision and then just live with that for the trip. I don't own a 70-200 so I don't have the question of that vs the 100-400. If I go on some non-wildlife trip I will travel with just the 24-105 and 100-400 as I never feel I am in some situation in which 70-200 is what I need, for me it tends to be less than 100 or more than 200.

I recently bought the 2.0xTC for my GM 70-200mm f2.8 II with A7iv and I'm loving it! The image quality is great and I'm not noticing any degradation in focus speed. I probably have slightly fewer keepers with the 2.0x TC, but not sure if that's just me or the TC.

Really sounds like sony need to update the 100-400mm to a mk 2 version if the 70-200mm with a 2x is matching it .
