These "frost flowers" or "ribbon ice" formations are created during the first couple of hard freezes of a season by certain types of plant stems that split as the water in them freezes. untitled-03958-2.jpg
The ice is then extruded in delicate forms that begin to melt as the morning's first sun hits them.
