I have recently had many of these small flies, Episyrphus balteatus in my garden. They are attracted to my daylilies, which produce lots of pollen which they are able to chew and eat, unlike most flies. I enjoy trying to photograph them in flight, although the success rate is obviously very low.
These were all taken in burst mode at ISO 12,800 and 1/8000sec, with the camera deciding the apertures, which were usually quite small.
