I am currently using the 200-400 and cropping in but want to get closer Sonys website as I can see shows nothing that can get closer than just short of 12 inches the 90mm?

Hello Mike, what camera are you using? Do you mean you're using the 100-400mm? It really depends on how close you want to get to the flower or insect. There are are a lot of 'macro' shots on the Sony Alphashooters Macro Facebook forum where people are using long telephoto lenses and getting great shots of bees and butterflies.
However they have cropped in to magnify the image in post (editing). If you want to see really fine detail then yes you need a macro like the 90mm but with the closeness comes disadvantages: shallow depth of field and proximity to the insect that scares it off, particularly butterflies (if you're shooting wildlife).

Sony 90mm macro or mc-11 adapter with the Sigma 180mm macro

The Sony 90mm F2.8 macro is excellent. It is consistently rated one of the sharpest lenses around form any manufacturer. It is easy to use and is great for other types of work besides macro swell. Many use it for portrait work. I upload 2 shots i took earlier today with this lens.

Depends on how often you will use the 90mm lens Mike it's quite expensive and a specialist lens with a very narrow depth of field I have the Minolta 100mm macro adapted find it frustrating to use when I can zoom in with my 100-400mm +1.4ext and gives me ok results I am only a hobbyist so happy with what I get

Hi mike, you can put a macro tube on your zoom lens and that will get you closer to your subject I use a 10mm and a 13mm and some times both together
