Rumors Sigma has been busy! 6 new lenses coming?

Sony Alpha Rumors says 2 new APSC lenses and 4 new full frame lenses:

• Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 APS-C ART autofocus lens
• Sigma 12mm f/1.4 APS-C Contemporary autofocus lens (with aperture ring).
• Sigma FE 200mm f/2.0
• Sigma FE 35mm f/1.2 II
• Sigma FE fast telephoto prime lens with specs never seen before
• Sigma FE travel zoom lens with specs never seen before

While I wish they had announced a 50-150 f2.8 APSC lens, the rest of the lenses look pretty good. Nothing to make me start counting my spare change yet, but I always like looking at their stuff; I simply cannot remember a bad review for a Sigma lens in recent years.

Never seen before specs they say. Well then I am guessing a 478mm F3.7 & a 22-132mm F1.8-4. Those seem like specs never seen before in lenses.

I won't comment on the lenses shorter than 50mm (when I'm shooting shorter than 50mm, I'll use the 20-70 f/4 or 28-70 f/2). Nor the travel zoom - I doubt it would have specs I'd want.

The problem with a 200 f/2 will be the classic 1, 2 hits:

• no teleconverter support
• no AFC above 15fps

I would not buy it, because the cameras where I'd use a 200/2 shoot faster than 15fps...

If you want it to use on an A7R body, or an A7 body, the frame rate isn't an issue, but the lack of teleconverter still bites.

So we come to the "fast telephoto prime with unseen specs" - I fear this one may hit the two roadblocks that stand in the way of the 200/2.

Sigma's 500/5.6 has fans, including our esteemed Tim! If this new lens has performance akin to that lens, it too may gain a following. What might it be? Perhaps a 1000mm f/8? Given the appetite for the 400-800mm, maybe a 1000mm lens? There have already been 800mm and 1200mm lenses, which is why I suggested 1000mm.

I wonder if Sigma has been talking to Sony about possibly lifting those two restrictions for higher-end lenses? Even if they got the restrictions lifted for just a handful of lenses, and it cost them $100/copy of each lens, I think it would seriously worth it. The lenses I'd think would be worth licensing would be:

• the new 300-600 f/4 (obvious first candidate!)
• the putative 200 f/2
• the existing 500 f/5.6

But I'd love to have a 200 prime! Doubtless it would be too expensive/large/heavy anyway.

As yes, I have nothing (and no experience with) anything wider than 24*. The wide zoom might fill a gap. But it would be a collector gap: I don't think I'd use it much.


*A low cost, maybe MF, ultrawide/fisheye might get past that embargo. But nothing more.

I owned both Canon EF 200mm primes. The 200mm f/2.8 was a regular prime, not too special. The 200mm f/2 was a monster - weighed 2.5kg, and had an enormous front element - put it on a Canon 1 series body, and your camera weighed 4kg. I would definitely not buy that again!
