The 200-600 is a great lens, but it’s NOT a replacement for the 100-400. They each have their strengths. I have had both for a while now and In my opinion, the 100-400 does everything a little better except for the max reach. That said with the 1.4xTC, the 100-400 is 95% there when it comes to the max reach of the 200-600 and it’s a hell of a lot lighter and fits anywhere you can fit the 70-200GM. P

Okay, not the toughest target! But loved the highland cattle on our recent trip to the highlands. A9 + 100-400mm. This one seemed to encapsulate my memory of them best.

I agree wholeheartedly! I love my 200-600mm for shooting with it mounted on the tripod and for greater reach, but the 100-400mm is so much easier to carry around and use while out walking somewhere. I have put a 1.4x teleconverter on each lens, so now the 100-400mm comes close to the reach of the 200-600mm without the weight and awkwardness, and the tripod-mounted 200-600mm reaches further now with the TC so that I can get shots of waterfowl swimming in the lake even when they're quite a ways away.

Have a poor record of keepers with the 1.4. Chalking it up for now to poor settings will try again.

I am undecided if it's better to keep the TC1.4 on by default, or when needed. It certainly is a hassle to keep switching and do it safely without getting dust on the sensor. Often I forgo to the extra focal lengthy in favor of better f stop, in particular on evening walks in lower light conditions

. And it depends on the style of photography. I try to go for composition rather than micro-detail.

Went out for a walk around the lake with my 100-400mm + 1.4x TC, and was delighted to spot the resident GBH trying to find himself some lunch..... I shot a few images and just hung out with him for a while, and was rewarded when he suddenly decided to take off and I was able to capture him soaring aloft:

A Partridge in the Lincolnshire wolds. I really wanted a backdrop that wasn't just sky and I got it, all of it!

Yesterday afternoon I went out for a walk around the lake and was able to get pretty close to our resident immature Great Blue Heron..... I was delighted to be able to get a headshot of him without the need to crop later!

Headshot of Alfred, the Great Blue Heron: I was able to get really close, no cropping needed! The lake, with its various reflections, created an interesting, colorful background:
