I don't know about Sydney's Christmas displays, but yes they do put on a great show for New Years. My wife made the comment, that the Melbourne decorations looked "cheap and amateurish". They certainly weren't cheap.

Where I live, areas that display an unusual amount of decoration are listed in the newspaper. I have shot some of these previously but have not, so far, done so this year. The weather may dictate whether I go this year or not.

It has always struck me as a little bizarre given our climate, that so many of our Christmas decorations, and food, simply mirror northern hemisphere ones.
We used to have several regular areas around the suburbs that had whole streets that decorated as fund raisers for charity. But the councils, and police, stopped it because of traffic problems . The decorations I posted are largely, ones I walk past with my dogs.
