Yep the 400-800mm has never recieved much acclaim from sony shooters ,its generally a good birding lens ,but i will probably let mine pass at some point ill wait and see what the new sony 100-400mm looks like ,the extra reach is useful on the 400-800mm on certain subjects ,i would prefer something that would go a little wider and lot brighter ,i do not shoot as much on birds etc as i used too ,i did enjoy using it at fairford this year .it is a sharp lens but too dark for a lot of the time ,i have hand held it for hours on end not a real problem ,but its the bulk when your not shooting and rare that i would take it for walk on the whim i might see something when out ,where as my my sigma 500mm f5.6 could go in back pack even if not planning using it and would crop to 800mm and look similar to the 400-800mm ,the copy i have have is sharp although i thought my 200-600mm was also ,but that sharpness faded over time ,mind you it had seed a lot of use and the pavement ,
Why would sharpness fade? Mine is still pin sharp after 5 years.
