Does anyone have any reliable news about the release date for the Sony A7v, expected costs and features? I've been waiting to hear about this for the last 6 months.

I don't think there is any info other than rumours and unreliable speculation unfortunately.

Nothing new and the rumours seem to have gone quiet. The only thing we can say for sure is that it will be expensive. I just hope it does not use the same sensor.

What sensor do you think it will use then?

No idea but it needs a faster read out speed to compete with R6II and Z6III . If Sony makes that partially stacked sensor in the Z6III that could be one option but 33mp not 24mp. Sony needs a great entry level twin card slot camera to compete with the Z5II, which is doing very well in sales. I am not sure how Sony could do this whilst also competing with the Z6III and R6II. Especially on price, where Sony is already the most expensive. They could almost do with two new full frame, twin card slot cameras but I don't think that will happen.

Maybe they will drop it on the press like they did with the RX1R-III, no warning, just <Sony waves hand> Here you go!

But it kinda makes me wonder if they had a redesign at some point, delaying production,
Or they strategically delayed it to give the RX1R its time to shine,
OR were hoping the tariff nonsense would have been resolved by now...

I think Sony just goes along and does whatever it wants to do without taking much notice of what other manufacturers are up to.

I thought it could be the tarrif stuff that is delaying release dates and release info. I'm hoping for some new features like an increased megapixel count, pre-shot, faster burst mode and faster read/write speed. I'm quite happy with my A7iv, but I'd like a second body. Price is important, if its too expensive for what it offers over the A7iv, I'll probably consider another body or just make do with what I have.

Not sure you will get all of your wish list as it will hurt the A1 sales. I think 33mp is about right and still higher than the Z6III and R6III. Read out speed has to be improved, which forces them to come away from using the same sensor in two models ,which they have done so often in the past. Sony's biggest problem is if they bring out a camera which is better than the Z6III in almost every way it will be expensive. Leaving the amazing value for money Z5II on its own for price and spec (canon has the R8 but only one card slot). The Z5II is selling very well, it's a camera with no real completion in its price bracket. I would love to see Sony come out with a A7IVa, so the same camera with the new AI AF and maybe A9III grip but same lcd as the IV and price it closer to the Z5ii. At the same time come out with a kick ass A7V at a higher price point. I know they will not do this but it would be nice.

Tariffs are tax just us gringos pay, shouldn't impact release in other markets. I am in the market for a 2nd body to travel with, and thinking a possibility could be the A7V depending on specs. I would think (or at least hope) that they include CF Express. My guess is the announcement comes in September when there is a trade show I think in Amsterdam.

One camera that does seem to be not getting a refresh on schedule is the A7RVI which I would consider to upgrade from my IV. But if the A7V comes with CF express, then I may just go with that for a 2nd. So in the same boat, hoping, wanting, waiting for news

The A7R line got that slick LCD panel and the AI chip with the A7RV release. Sony would be foolish to upgrade it again so soon. And Sony execs are no fools.
BTW, did the A7C-R not tick your boxes for a travel body? Or did you mean to just have another full-frame body when traveling on a shoot?

I don't know if it's just me but I really can't see the point of having two bodies. If I had ready cash to do that, I would either sell the body I already have and upgrade to a newer, more expensive one (which I have no intention of doing by the way) or buy a new lens or two.

There are multiple reasons to have two or more bodies, but the most important one for me is that I do not expect any body to be able to do everything. So I choose which body I take depending on what I expect to need. That’s especially true with Sony, but would even apply if I were using other brands. I know a photographer using a Hasselblad or a Canon R1, depending on use case.

Others carry two bodies because they want two lenses ready to shoot. Or as backup. Some of them run two copies of the same body, just with different lenses.

When I purchased my A7RIV at that time my primary focus of interest was landscape/scenic. Since that time the interests have changed some to include wildlife where I need to do burst shooting and sometimes make video. For this reason my interest had grown to a 2nd body. I already travel with my old a6000 as an emergency backup. My interests focused on CF Express capable cameras, but also cameras that included improved video, rear screen etc.

I may just end up getting a used A7RV as a 2nd, or A7RVI releases in spring and that RIV becomes backup. Or I replace with R5 and get A7V. Since neither RVI or 7V are even released at this point its all moot. Based on Sony's release schedule, we are due for RVI.

As for a reason to have a 2nd body, I will explain it this way. Next May I am taking a trip to Namibia with primary interest being photography. The trip costs is a couple of A1s (new). If my only camera died or had any technical issue arise, I would be devastated. But I also found it is handy to have that 2nd camera with lens already attached. I had thought to maybe use A7V as backup, but also focused and ready for video while the R4/5/6 is otherwise occupied.

The biggest reason I have 2 bodies is for a backup for the big trips, don't want to be out on a photography trip and not be able to take photos. I appear to be going down the path of selling the oldest body when I get a new one. Rarely do I find a need to take two bodies out with me at a time. The times that I have taken two bodies out have been in the spring when I plan on covering a small area for birding but the area also has the possibilities for some interesting macro or like this weekend I was doing bug macro and a 90mm just really isn't good for butterflies. I wouldn't go out and buy a 2nd body for this.

Since Wildlife is becoming a big thing for you I would suggest a used A1 over another A7R or an A7 body. As someone that has had an A7Riv and has an A1 and A1ii I can tell you that yes the AI chip helps with auto-focus but it is not as game changing as 50mp+30fps. The AF improvement going from A7Riv to A1 is far more than going from A1 (no AI chip) to A1ii. Getting an A7 body doesn't really add anything for you, which means that your use of it will be extremely limited, making it an expensive paperweight most of the time. Your 2nd body should be something that compliments your other camera or covers some area the other camera is less capable in. When I had the A7Riv and A1 the A1 was used for most things but if I was doing in home macro or going out for sunset or a landscape/flower thing I would take the A7Riv.

My thoughts on A7V
Things they will do:
Add AI chip so all A1/7/9 bodies have the same AF feature set.
Keep the same MP count - 2 generations with same MP count seems to be the path for Sony.
Get new multi-axis flippy screen - Everybody loves this so why wouldn't they?
Standard improvements in noise reduction... - you know all the basic stuff that improves that you really can't tell from one generation to the next.
Things I feel good about them doing:
Add pre-capture - This is just software based so I really don't see why they wouldn't do this. Feels like something all future bodies will have.
Add in focus stacking - If they haven't already. This kind of feels like a duh but also seems like something they would leave out.
Things they really should do but probably won't:
Increase FPS to at least 15 - They should probably push this to 20 but it makes zero sense for them not to go to at least 15.
Add in burst shooting - Along with the increase FPS they should add the burst feature as well.
Improved IBIS - This should come with the new body
