On my A7iv i have the AEL button set for Reg.AF Area+AF. I use AF-on for back button focusing and my AEL for tracking.

So AF-on is set for Spot S and AEL is set for Tracking M.

When looking at the display the Tracking M is blinking over the Spot S showing that the Reg.AF Area+AF is indeed set to Tracking M.

On the Focus Area Limit I have only the Spot S and Tracking M checked. Everything else is unchecked so they shouldn't even be an option on the screen.

The problem is when I press the AEL for tracking it jumps to Zone Tracking. The Tracking M shows for a split second and then it switches and tracks the subject with Zone Tracking.

When I point the camera at a blank wall with nothing to focus on and press the AEL the Tracking M is on but when moving the camera from the blank wall to something that the camera can focus on, without ever taking my finger from the button, it switches to Zone Tracking.

It doesn't matter which tracking mode I set as soon as I press the AEL button it will go back to Zone Tracking.

I'm wondering if it is a glitch or am I doing something wrong in the settings? It worked perfectly before I updated the firmware to 6.01. I also noticed when I updated the firmware the Custom focus modes were all turned on in my Custom settings. I had to go into the Focus Area Limit and uncheck the Focus areas I don't use.

I just reset the camera back to factory settings and the issue is still there no matter which button I’m using.
I tried every tracking area and no matter which one I program as soon as I press the button to focus it switches to Zone Tracking.
Is anyone else having similar tracking issues on their A7iv?

That is NOT the indicator for the "zone" area; as you stated, it indicates the "wide" area.
That indicates that when it acquires something to track, it goes into a "wide" zone, regardless of the "area" you set.
That, of course, makes sense because for it to actually track, it would need the whole area.
Your camera seems to be functioning normally when utilizing tracking

Yes, I mistakenly thought that was the zone indicator but it is indeed the wide tracking area.
But the issue still remains the same. It doesn’t matter which tracking area I program into my settings, as soon as I press the focus button, the tracking wide overrides it.
I went on the Sony website and chatted with an enthusiast who then switched me over to a specialist. We tried what we could and couldn’t get the tracking to work with the setting that I program. I’m am now waiting for a phone call from a technician.
