In Australia and New Zealand Sony has an organisation called Sony Scene which is basically intended to encourage (mostly amateur) photography. One of the things Sony Scene does is provide a framework in which Sony Advocates and Sony Ambassadors can run events. Events are mostly photowalks / photoshoots often with a some learning included. Sometimes they include a chance to try out new Sony cameras and lenses, or even existing lenses - I was at one on Saturday where they had a couple of A7RVI bodies, and people were trying them with the 50-150 (and being very impressed...)

I think I've shown a few shots taken at Sony Scene events in the past. I know Richard A has mentioned Sony Scene Australia before.

I don't know if there is an equivalent to Sony Scene in other countries?

Here are a few shots from last Sunday when there was a group shoot with a dancer in a park with a lot of fallen leaves (Melbourne is approaching the end of autumn - June is winter).

The sky was 100% overcast, and the light was relatively dim. I was using my lens wide open (f/2), but with a dancer I wanted to freeze movement, so I was running with auto-ISO min shutter 1/2000 and ISO was frequently up around 6400 - 8000 - 12800. I dropped it to 1/1000, and the shot below was at ISO 6400. Even so, the A1 II + 50-150 f/2 was nailing eye AF like this:

I do like photographing a dancer spinning in chaînés because they are turning (hair flying out if loose, skirt flaring if not a tutu...) and they can be moving across the stage. Like this:

I love what f/2 does to the background.

And now one I really cannot decide on the right crop:

Here is almost the full frame - shows the trees and fallen leaves for context

I like the billowing fabric on the right, but not so much on the left. So maybe crop to a square?

This emphasises the dancer, but does it lose the context? I did keep in the tree branch framing the billow of fabric on the right.

Opinions?

The dancer worked hard, despite wet grass and less than perfect conditions. I should point out that she doesn't have tattoos - that's a print on the leotard!

Opinions?

The crop is ok! I'd probably try to improve the left/right balance by cropping right. No space to spare at the top, so bring in the bottom-right corner until it works. But I could be wrong and I'd only find out by doing it!

Nice pictures. Sounds like a great event.

+1

The billowing blue adds pizzaz and does not take away from the dancer!
