  1. Yes
What do folks think may be coming this year? I can't think of a body that is due. I can only think of some lenses that were rumored
  • 100-400 f/4 GM (and maybe with built in TC, this would be sweet)
  • 100-400 G lens
  • 400 f2.8 II with built in TC
Others?

The 200-600 f/5.6-6.3 G is going on seven years old, it would be nice to see them update that and upgrade it to a GM as they did with the 90mm Macro.

I'll be all over the 100-400m f/4 when it is available.

Not a prediction but what I would like and someone on this forum more technically minded may be able to say, having retired recently and money isn't exactly falling out of the trees, is it possible that the A9ii could be updated to have bird eye focus.

Surely, it already has it? The original a1 has it.

As my wife said when I retired, “Twice as much husband, half as much money.”

That is probably a very long shot given hardware (processor) needs and I've never heard of a "hack". I would say look at resale of the A9II and scan for a good deal on A1. With the mark II out there are more and more on the used market. Check KEH.com (both to sell or buy)

Thanks Roger that's something I'm thinking about.

Well I have the a9 mk1 same as mk2 human and animal eye focus, I don`t use it anyway not even on my a1, its just not needed in my opinion if you get the birds head in focus the eye will be in focus.

That isn't necessarily true. Here is an image in which the head is in focus but eye is out of focus. Depending on the bird type and the angle of the head the camera could focus on the bill and not the head even when using a small focus area. This shot would most likely have had the eye in focus if I was using the A1 with the bird eye on since nearly all the others taken at that time were.

well none of that shot is in focus and I wouldn`t even post it, and it is not a relevant comment , look at the numbers, and it is a case of everything is wrong with the shot from lens to shutter speed etc simple really people do not learn the basics before looking for short cuts

I predict minor updates to software, probably another Vlogging camera, as they seem to be obsessed with them, and nothing more.
Lens line up is currently pretty comprehensive, I think they need to get on top of quality control more than anything else.

The chin of the bird is in focus. The lens is absolutely correct for what I was trying to accomplish and given the time of day I thought to do this the numbers were what they needed to be for any hope of getting what I wanted. That shot isn't what I was going for but it does show that you can have a head or part of a head in focus and the eye of the bird out of focus. The eye AF gives you a finer point of focus than even the smallest of the AF Points and it ensures that your focus isn't on the mandible or mustache or waddle. The eye AF isn't magic in that it will make up for other things you do wrong, it just increases the chances that you get the shot you are looking for.
