Birds A first for me a great spotted woodpecker

So a first for me as title. Saturday the usual walk changed as the lakes were frozen over, so I walked the river banks for a few hours, these are long range shots of a tree on the far bank

Beautiful bird and photos, I love how the red picked up. On our side of the pond we have the Hairy Woodpecker, similar, but not as much red and contrast as these. I have one living in a dead tree behind my Pennsylvania home. I actually like their drilling sound, but it drives my wife crazy when he really gets going.
