I just purchased a used Sony A7R IV. I really enjoy using the eye tracking focus when taking photos and it works well. When I try to use it in video, I can't get it to work unless I touch the display to set tracking and I haven't had much success with it. Is that the only way focus tracking works in video for the A7R IV and are there tips to make it work more consistently? I prefer using the EVF for photos and video.

Correct, it doesn't work with the a7Riv in video mode. You have to use touch on the LCD. Because of this, I traded in my a7Riv for the a7Rv:

New to any other Sony camera, the a7Rv will now allow you to use an assigned custom button to turn tracking on during video. Previously, you could only turn on tracking (in video mode) by using the touch screen, which is very difficult to do if your eye in in the viewfinder. The menu selection to do this is only available by assigning a custom key. Still frame shooting is the same, but not new with the a7Rv.

This feature has also migrated to the a6700, a7Cii and a7CR
