Hi everyone, I've been out of it for a while due to heavy work committments, but hopefully coming back soon. I'm also going to splash out on some new kit, a second body, a new long lens, and a compact camera. For the latter, I've been thinking about the RX 100 series. Is there any validity in the rumours that Sony may release a Mark 8 version of the RX100? I would really like a compact camera that can fit in my pocket, and I rather not buy very old tech if possible. Also, if not the SONY RX 100 M7 or M8 (if it comes out in the next 6 months), what else should I consider?

No there isn't. Unfortunately, I think the RX100 series is dead in the water as far as a new model goes. They are still manufacturing the MVII in limited numbers though. I love my RX100M7 and I use it all the time. For it's size it doesn't really have any competitors.

Hi Richard, thanks for your reply. Do you think the new camera Sony has registered could be a new RX100 or another compact camera? Also, you have posted some great shots with the RX100, but have you felt constrained by the relatively slow lens? Have you tried to do tight crops? Many years ago, before I was back into photography and was strictly a jpeg shooter, I had the RX100 M3 and thought it was a great camera, but was frustrated by the lack of reach.

I don't think so but to be honest, you never really know. As far as feeling constrained, no, not really. A tiny camera like this, with a 24-200 equivalent lens and all the other features is going to have some limitations but I just embrace it for what it is. With modern software you can overcome a lot of short comings if you know what you are doing. I still have my RX100 M3 but one of my kids usually has it these days. That was the camera that got me right into the Sony system. As far as tight crops go, this is one of the first photos I took with the camera.
