Belted Kingfishers are very skittish and hard to approach. You hear them more than you see them. On this day I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

Belted Kingfishers claim a fairly easy to determine territory and they will patrol it several times a day. So you don't chase them, just pick a spot and wait for them. If you want to learn their territory range chase them.

I've never found that to be the case. Maybe yours are a little bit tamer than ours

If they are tamer here they certainly make nearly all other birds seem comatose. Here I know where 2 pairs have the edges of their territory and because I usually walk the river trail there are times where I unintentionally chase one of them down river. Usually what happens is you get within 50 or so yards and then they fly 200 yards further away. You repeat that till they hit the edge of their territory and then they do a quick double back in which they will fly a greater distance than I can see up/down river. So if you want a closer shot of them you need to find some place along their territory and wait.
