My local dealer put up a bunch of specials for “Black Friday”, and I saw something that amused me.

They had prices for a 1920GB M series (the lesser ones) CFeA card rated VPG200 and up to 800MB/s read (ie: a V2 card); and a price for a 1920GB G series (top grade) CFeA card rated at VPG400 and up to 1800MB/s read (ie: a V4 card). The V4 card is 3/4 of the price of the V2 card !?!?

I guess the people who set the prices don’t know that V4 cards are completely compatible?

Oh, even better: you can get the new 240GB V4 card for 80% of the price of the 160GB V2 card - 50% more storage, more than twice as fast, and 20% cheaper…

In case you are wondering, no, I’m not going to set them straight on compatibility.

Sony card prices have always been nuts. Both Type A and B cards have been dropping hard this year. I try not to stock too many because if I don't shift them quick enough I end up having to sell them for a loss. A lot of brands have discontinued their 2.0 cards already in favour of the 4.0 cards.

Yeah, but you'd think they'd be wanting to get rid of the V2 cards, not undercut them with V4 cards? I suppose they might be hoping someone will pay enough for the V2 cards so they don't make a loss?

I wince when I remember what I paid for my first 160GB V2 card (prior to the arrival of the original A1).

I must admit to being tempted to get one 240GB V4 Sony for times when I want to constrain my shooting :) Nah, not going to happen!
