Mercato Mayfair is foodhall in a deconsecrated church. The Church, St. Mark's, is a Grade I listed building which was constructed in 1825. It was deconsecrated in 1974 and since November 2019 St Mark's, has been Mercato Mayfair.

During WWII, St Mark's was informally known as The American Church in London due to its proximity to the US Embassy and as a centre for American worshippers. It was visited by President Dwight Eisenhower and Eleanor Roosevelt when she was First Lady.

Fascinating! I had no idea a church could be "deconsecrated" for commercial use, other than maybe becoming a library. I'm not really a devout Roman Catholic anymore, but this scene is quite jarring to me. I can't really put it any other way. Still, kudos to Ed for capturing the scene.

Yes, I know what you mean. I have the same background and it was a bit wierd when I walked in. The church stood idle for many years, essentially decaying, before it was taken over. I'm also collaborating with a company in the Netherlands (VR business) and their head office is also a deconsecrated church. Once deconsecrated and sold off, I guess you can put the building to any use.

Things were a little different when I was an altar boy and I served in the church!
