I'm looking to replace the clear 40.5mm filter in my Sony drop-in holder with a quality circular polarizer instead of buying the Sony VF-DCPL1.

Has anyone done this on the Sony 100-400 GM? If so, what 40.5mm CPL did you go with, and are you happy with it?

I'm just looking for a high-quality filter that fits and performs well. If the consensus is that the Sony VF-DCPL1 is worth the extra money, I'd like to hear that too. Thanks!

I believe all the Sony lens which take drop-in filters use the same size (from memory, that’s 600 GM, 400 GM, 300 GM, and now 100-400 f/4.5 - are there any others?) - the compatibility page for the Sony drop in circ-pol shows it is fully compatible with all 4 lenses.

I haven’t bought one yet, but a quick google didn’t show me any third party solutions - Sigma make one, but it appears to be for their 300-600mm lens.

The drop in comes with a clear 40.5mm. I’m hoping to just buy another 40.5 CPL, unscrew the clear and screw in the CPL. the Sony CPL (expensive) includes the drop in tray which I don’t need “if” I can just replace the filter itself.

I am fairly sure the Sony CPL, with the holder has a knurled wheel that allows the filter to be rotated, the old a-mount 300 had that and again that does not fit the e-mount version, I have both 300 lens , and myself need to buy the Sony CPL and holder for the e-mount 300 which I might add was included in the a-mount 300 lens
