Ducks swimming on a reflection

Day two with my new lens* and this was not at all what I had hoped coming out of the camera. I had accidentally left the exposure compensation at +1, and the reflection in the water was difficult to see. The detail of the ducks was buried deep in the shadows. I had just missed a live webinar from Capture One on "Understanding Exposure and Contrast", so while those concepts were on my mind, I didn't have the benefit of the training.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this one.
