So as title first 4 shots from 100-400 gm in rubbish light and between showers, I think a bit more practice will be needed

Looks ok to me.
 
They look fine. Any more and they'd look overcooked.
 
It so easy to do when sharpening a large crop. It's one of the reasons I dislike cropping that much, I can never decide if it looks ok or not!
 
Nice enough and well done. Though I just feel a really artificial vibe when I'm looking at those images.

I don't think sharpness is a problem there, they're sharp enough and as good as you will get considering the size of the bird in the frame.
