Chilembwe and Chorley on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square London. The fourth plinth in northwest corner of Trafalgar Square was without a statue for 150 years due to insufficient funds. From 1999 to 2001 three temporary statues were exhibited for a year each. In 2003 it was decided that a series of rolling temporary commissions be installed on the plinth, which are known as the Mayor of London's Fourth Plinth Commission. The current statue, Antelope, restages a 1914 photograph of Baptist preacher John Chilembwe and European missionary John Chorley. Chilembwe wears a hat in an act of defiance, as at the time, it was illegal for a black man to wear a hat in the presence of a white man.
