4.0 applied. Test shots appear just fine, will expose alot more photons tomorrow.

I had some mild concern due to a coincidental hot pixel showed itself upon reboot. After a pixel remapping, all is well.

At an ice hockey tournament this weekend and shot a game with 3.0. This morning I took a chance and did the 4.0 update. Held my breath the entire time, probably should not have when I needed the camera in a few hours, but the install was seamless. Just shot a game with 4.0 and I thought the tracking was much stickier and stayed with my target. Hockey is tough because all the helmets are the some so it’s harder for the camera to stay with one when another crosses in front. I would say go for it with no worries.

Bit the bullet and updated both the A1 II and the A9 III. For all of the talk of "use a fully charge battery!", the update consumed les than 1% of the energy in the battery. I used an old 95MB/s SD card (one without the extra row of pins) and it worked fine. Didn't take very long, and I'm a lot more comfortable doing it this way than the old way (I may even retire the old Windows box I used to use only for updating firmware - oh, hang on, they don't have update-from card for lenses, yet).

I do think it's funny that Sony download the firmware directly as BODYDATA.DAT - I guess they think we are too dumb to know about ZIP files  - so made a little subdirectory in Downloads called A1II_fw4.0 and another called A9III_fw4.0.

I've checked, and yes, my A9 III now has Auto in the subject recognition types - nice addition. I've removed the vehicles from it, because I reckon I'd be more annoyed than grateful if it locks onto a motorbike

I wondered about the 50 percent minimum battery requirement too. My battery had 75 percent and I hardly noticed any drain. I guess it’s just an abundance of caution. I think iPhone won’t even let the update start at less than 50 percent. In any case, and not to jinx myself, I never had a problem with a Sony update.

I haven't had major problems with an update, but I did find the "update the camera via a cable" approach painful - I'm far happier with the card-based updates, and it makes updates using a Mac as easy as using Windows.

The instructions I've ready talk of a fully-charged battery, not even 50%. I don't mind, and I guess it's to discourage updates with a battery that's close to empty.
