Also known as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial.
This statue was memorialized in the iconic 1945 photograph of six Marines raising a U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II taken by Associated Press combat photographer Joe Rosenthal.
I wanted to capture not just the iconic profile, but all the angles. The detail is quite stunning in person. Please do see it for yourself, if you have the opportunity.
I had never been here before. I have to admit... I had a bit of a lump in my throat as I imagined what it must have been like defending freedom all those many years ago. So, a shout out to all those who have served defending Democracy - Not just US Marines, but any solider from any country.
This American appreciates your sacrifice.
