Japanese Sika deer

We're currently in Kushiro looking for red crowned cranes (Tancho). It's possibly safe to say we got slightly lost today, but the sight of these beautiful Sika deer made our afternoon.

I'm no expert, I asked in the national park centre and they identified it for me.

They do, when mature, but only on the body.

Interesting. I did a quick search and it looks like the Hokkaido subpecies of sika deer (the ones in this area) only have faint spotting along the top of the back. The other subpsecies of sika deer I have seen (in zoological parks) are heavily spotted all over.
