We observed some interesting Kingfisher behaviour today.

I think this is a young female, you can see a small patch of orange on the lower mandible. Happy to be corrected though.

The photo where she's looking up, she was keeping an eye on a Marsh harrier flying by.

The next shot is a quite spectacular yawn.

Then she has a successful fish capture.

Then I get a bit mystified, she dives and appears to catch a fish, when I look back at the photos however, it wasn't a fish but a small stick. She stuns it as if it were a fish, then throws it up and down a few times, before finally throwing it back in the water.

I can't explain this behaviour, practice, play, still learning the ropes?

If anyone knows, please let me know.

Very nice. Not a place I know either! Yes, a juvenile practicing.
