Lens Firmware Updates for Rented Lenses?

I am renting the 200-600mm lens for my trip to Yellowstone next week. I am wondering if I would need to update firmware within my camera for the lens, or are lens firmware updates added directly to the lens itself?

The 200-600 hasn't had a firmware update since it was released, so you won't need to worry about this. If you did need to update the firmware on a lens then you would do this through the camera, obviously with the lens attached
