Given that our weather has been generally crap for getting out with the camera, I haven't been out much at all, but my garden has provided some nice insects and flutters, and I did get an afternoon at a reserve in. Here's a selection with some descriptions on each. I'll post some moths from trapping later.

Heavily cropped shot of a Ruby Tailed Wasp. A non stinging wasp that lays it's eggs in bore holes made by bees. They look like an armoured jewel.

Cabbage Wasp. Another non stinging/biting wasp that lays eggs in bee holes. The extra long tail is the oviposter, so she can get deep into the bore hole. These are not too comoon, and quite amazing.

Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar. The first time I've had chance to photograph these amazing caterpillars. 3 different ones here in various stages of development. Falling into the reedbad after wasn't in the plan. Sometimes we have to suffer for our art :D

Ok Kev I know but as soon as I go near long grass some critters bites me, I know these dont bite but, I have just spent 3 days with my arm 3 times it usual size due to a bite I didnt even feel.

Cheers Mark. Not that common, they rely on the right habitat for there to be mining bees etc.

Yeah that sucks. I don't get bitten often, but my wife used to until she was told to take Vitamin B1 tablets. She does daily and almost never gets bitten now. Might be worth you trying Gary, it certainly works for a lot of people.

Same here have the blood thinner since clots and bingo lunch time for every critter

Cracking collection Kev! At least the butterflies are putting in a good show this year despite the miserable weather.
