What's going on in the Sony firmware upgrade teams?

I was looking at Tim's blog page and there seem to be a heck of a lot of firmware upgrades.

I thought Sony was renowned for having the fewest firmware upgrades?

And some are bringing real upgrades - we're seeing cameras getting new functionality that has come out after the camera's announcement - not just bug fixes.

Not complaining about that.

Sony tends to have a spike of updates around major camera releases.

Probably no more than usual. I mostly only post about new cameras, lenses and firmware updates on the blog these days, so it might look like there was a lot recently. I'm not sure why Sony has removed the ability to update lens firmware via memory card on the A7V with the latest update though, forcing people back to Win/Mac seems like a major step backwards.
