Doesn't look like bird eye tracking is reliable.
I always find it frustrating switching between human and animal Eye AF, having a 3rd Bird Eye AF option is going to be even more frustrating. That said, I think this is really only useful when you are very close to your subject and depth of field comes into play. If I'm shooting BIF they are often 20+ meters out and DOF isn't really a big issue.
 
I've never lost the habit of focus and recompose when close to static birds.
And with BIF in a three degree field of view just keeping them in the frame is success enough. I'm usually shooting at around f8 to get most of the wings sharp(ish) so the eye gets captured too.
