I might be wrong, but I always thought it was an acronym for "Interchangeable lens camera E-mount"
The zoom lenses all use the focal range in the coding and all the primes use the aperture in the coding. So the 35mm F1.4 GM is SEL35F14GM. In the naming of the lenses all the full-frame lenses are "FE" and all the APS-C lenses are just "E". So the FE 35mm F1.8 is for full frame and the E 35mm F1.8 is for APS-C.They usually (always?) omit the aperture for lenses.
