What does this acronym mean?

I might be wrong, but I always thought it was an acronym for "Interchangeable lens camera E-mount"

It does.

Their earlier A mount cameras had model name / codes starting with ILCA.

They leave out the A for Alpha, which means the original A1 comes out as ILCE-1, and the mark II as ILCE-1M2.

Their E mount lenses start with SEL (Sony E-mount Lens). They omit punctuation in the lens name/codes, which can be a little confusing, but a 20-70mm f/4 G comes out as SEL-2070G; and the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II comes out as SEL-70200GM2. They usually (always?) omit the aperture for lenses.

I like it - means I can generally predict the model name/code when I'm searching for it to find firmware updates :)

The zoom lenses all use the focal range in the coding and all the primes use the aperture in the coding. So the 35mm F1.4 GM is SEL35F14GM. In the naming of the lenses all the full-frame lenses are "FE" and all the APS-C lenses are just "E". So the FE 35mm F1.8 is for full frame and the E 35mm F1.8 is for APS-C.

Good point. It’s much more common for them to have multiple primes of the same focal length, like the several 50mm and 35mm primes. Even the 85mm primes. So they have SEL85F14GM and SEL85F14GM2 as well as the SEL85F18. I think the 50mm is the only example (so far) with two GM lenses distinguished by aperture alone: SEL50F12GM and SEL50F14GM. Plus, of course, the SEL50F18 and SEL50F25G…
