Many thanks is Craig. Do you think the PD slide and connectors are strong enough for the 300mm f2.8 and will it be comfortable for long walks?

The anchors are rated at 90kg, and the lens + body is under 3kg. I think they'll hold up

I have carried the 300 GM on a PD Slide or even Slide Lite for 4+ hours at a time (likewise the 50-150, which weighs about the same). I've done the same (but with the anchors attached to the lens lugs, rather than the body) with a Slide on the 100-400 f/4.5 (noticeably heavier) and with the 400-800 (over a kilo heavier). The 400-800 gets tiring, but it's just the weight - the step is laughing at my lack of fitness. I do cradle the 400-800 sometimes to relieve the weight on my neck - I'm going to try using the strap as a diagonal carry next time (so the weight doesn't rest on the back of my neck.

Absolutely no worries about the strength of the strap - just make sure the anchors are clicked into the ends of the strap (there's a nice positive click to confirm.

New Leofoto tripod (LN-364C) and 4-way geared head (G4PROM). Also, a RRS leveling base. I continue to be impressed with the quality of Leofoto gear. Its not at the level of RRS, but for half the cost (or less?) it get the job done with no complaints.

Geared heads are very sexy: they make me wish I used tripods!

I was looking at geared tripod heads a while ago but I decided, for what they are, they are too expensive. I also found out that they can wear quite quickly and replacement parts aren't available for a lot of them. I have been using my tripod quite a lot lately (and also my light travel tripod) and the three way head is fine to be honest. I'd rather spend that money on something else.

I have a Leofoto G4PROM on the way this week, just wondering if I really need a leveling base to go with it. I will be putting this head on some Gitzo carbon legs I had used with my gimbal head with the leveling base. The gimbal is going on a new set of Gitzo legs I found on sale.

I prefer a leveling base because (for me) adjusting the legs a few mm at a time is a royal PITA. I'd much rather simply deploy the legs, lock 'em down and then make the final leveling adjustment at the head. YMMV of course.

What do you think about leather lens cap with the 300 mm? Is that sufficient? It seems a little clumsy and adds to the challenge of packing the lens.

All depends on what you like, I prefer a ball head with a drag control over a three way for general use. I plan on trying the geared head for those times when I want more fine tuning control

Hello Ed!

For me, the Sony soft lens cap did not feel right. I wanted a hard, protective cover. From what I can see, your choices are:

• The Zemlin cap. I have a Zemlin cap for my Nikon Z 100-400mm. The fit is 'OK' - waaaay better than the standard Nikkor POS lens cap, but still with a bit of 'wiggle'. I have no idea how this might translate to the Sony FE 300mm lens cap...

• The Kase MCUV Filter Kit. Oh boy. Expensive! But perhaps the best solution for the Sony FE 300mm. If you're going to hemorrhage the cash for the 300, you might as well go for the gusto and go all in! Mine works very well and I have no regrets. (This is coming from a confirmed Hoya HD3 snob). Works perfectly with the standard Sony lens hood. Tight fit and doesn't get knocked off by the occasional, clumsy 'bump' (I plead the 5th!).

Or you can see if K&F Concept has one that fits. I don't know the front element size of the 300mm but K&F has a lot of sizes and at the prices you won't feel bad if you lose or break one.

It is most likely some UK supplier has some.
I actually just purchased a 2 pack of the 72mm for the 100-400GM and 24-105G because mine have taking a beating over the years and need to be replaced.

I have a pathological hate for ball heads. Having said that, they are pretty standard issue on small travel tripods. The one on my Ulanzi tripod is the best one I have used and it's actually ok. I have got used to it's quirks now. The Manfrotto 3 way I have had for probably more than 30 years now so I don't need to think about it. It's just muscle memory. When I was at Ingalalla Falls the other week I was pressed for time and I just set it up and away I went.

I just recently bought these for mounting my ZWO Seestar S50 on the Manfrotto tripod.
