Some Hummingbirds coming to the feeder. A6400 w/Sigma 100-400. All uncropped. The last 3 have identical exif: F6.3, 1/2000, 282mm. Why the double exposure look on two?View attachment 1380View attachment 1381View attachment 1382View attachment 1383
Hi lorelei37 ! as to double exposure look, I guess you are using silent/electronic shutter ? When shooting fast motion with electronic shutter you may get such effects , called rolling shutter distortion . Here's a link to an article about it : https://enthusiastphotoblog.com/silent-shutter-banding/
Have a nice day !
Greetings from Norway,

Yes, thank you! Another member suggested rolling shutter and I determined exactly what you say. The effect is not always a bad thing I think :)

An immature Crimson Rosella - one of Australia's parrots. It loses the green as an adult as you can see in the background bird.
It just had a bath; you can see the droplets being flicked off.

An easy BIF (slow flying) heron at Pittsford reserve last week. Pleased it came out sharpish at 1/1000 was using mode 3 on the 200-600mm for change to see if it worked any better for me. A bit far away for much detail but okay for me.

Good light and detail. Pity you couldn't get it a bit earlier.
Big water birds often don't need much shutter speed - a few seconds at 10fps will likely throw up something usable.

The Australian Reed-Warbler is a small shy fast-moving bird.

I squatted for half an hour persuading this one I was no immediate threat and it came out of the reed thicket.

f4 as well! Great shot Ziggy!
Thanks Drewid.
Lotta luck in that. I opt for low DOF for static birds to reduce distractions. This guy happened to take off and the focus happened to work lol.

Juvenile Kittiwake at Bempton Cliffs. Still working through shots from August :)

This is a two-year old Pacific Gull that obligingly circled around a headland near a township. So it was accustomed to featherless bipeds.

Denmark, Western Australia. Taken with the FE 100-400 & 1.4 TC.

Interesting shutter speed...

I saw experts recommend high speeds when I was learning and adopted that one as a default.
For large birds or gliding birds I may go slower to keep the ISO down (not for noise but for dynamic range). So eg 1/1500 for herons, egrets snd the like.
Slower to get some wing blur too. Eg 1/2000s with a bee-eater.
Default for the big lens is 1/4000s to deal with camera movement.
All handheld.

Yeah, but 3000? You must have your EV steps set differently to me, as I go 1/2500th - 1/3200th

Oh, yeah, sometimes it's 3200s. An undocumented feature.

If your EV steps are set at 0.5 you get 1/3000th instead of 1/3200th if they are set at 0.3. I always shoot 0.3. I had to go and test this out after I read your reply.

I use .3 and get either of those speeds showing as options with S priority. Not sure with M.

That's odd. Very odd. I do only use manual though.

Swamp Harriers
The adults are shy and do a 180 the second they see you, even at a distance.
Immatures are more curious.
