Birds Great Gray Owl

Managed to get out Thursday for a day trip to photograph Great Gray Owls. Left at 7am and got back just before 11pm. It's a 305 km trip to get there. We had good luck even though I missed the owlets in the nests. This nest had 5 owlets, one still in the nest, that the male hunted for. Most often he would bring the prey back to the female who then took it to the owlets. The picture of the male with the youngster shows the size of the prey (pocket gopher) to the size of the owlet. The male offered the prey to the owlet but it was too big for the owlet to swallow whole. He then took it to the female who tore it apart and fed 2 owlets with it.

Outstanding photos,well worth the effort. What part of the country did you see them. Here in Yorkshire we only tend to get Barn and Short eared owls,and the cute little owls.

I drove to the interior of B.C. B.C. is 4 times the size of England so we have lots of space as most people live in the southern part of the province. We have nothern pygmy owls, flammulated owls, saw-whet owls, boreal owls, screech owls, barn owls, short-eared owls, long-eared owls, great-horned owls, barred owls, snowy owls, hawk owls and great-gray owls. So lots of choice but some are very hard to get, almost impossible.
