Sigma lent me their new 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art to try out. 50mm is not a focal length that I'm shooting at often neither is an an aperture of F1.2. So apologies if the images suck :) They are all SOOC jpegs bar a couple of small crops. RAW images are available to download in our resources section for registered members.

Not awful by any means. CA doesn't look too bad even wide open, some where you'd expect to see it. Nice color and contrast, plenty sharp. Should be a popular lens at the size and price.

That, and the fact that there are hardly ANY 50 mm lenses in the Sony ecosystem... :p

Very kind Tim :) It is a nice lens but not a focal length I shoot at too often. Still, if I had money burning a hole in my pocket I'd probably be tempted to pick one up! We certainly can't complain about lack of choice when it comes to nifty fifty lenses on E-mount :D

Thanks Tim, I reckon you've just saved me a bag of sand or so. Not that your pictures are awful by any stretch, but I was considering one of these. Now, I don't think I need it. It's not a lens I'd pack for a trip, it just isn't versatile enough in comparison to some that I have. It's more a " walk round Norwich with the crazy aperture sigma" sort of thing.

There are really only two reasons to buy a lens like this over a more compact 50, incredible bokeh and the shallow depth of field. I think your candle shows how good the bokeh is, but when you look at the barbed wire, the depth of field is just so shallow, unless your subject is parallel to the plane of the sensor, it captures so little detail, it's only really use able for very specific images.

In reality, I think, most of the time, I wouldn't be using the 1.4 end at all.

Cheers Tim, I owe you a pint.

I'd prefer cider please Dave :) The depth of field is certainly very narrow but only when shooting at the minimum focusing distance. As soon as you start shooting subjects further away you have more room to play with. At 2 meters the DOF is already 0.11m and 5 meters it's 0.71m. It's a fun lens if you enjoy this style of shooting or need to shoot in dark places. Obviously there wasn't much light in the two churches that I shot in so it was beneficial there to keep the ISO down. It would be a nice lens for shooting some street photography after dark as well but there are certainly more versatile options out there if you'd prefer a good all-rounder.
