Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens Announced

Sigma has announced a new addition to their mirrorless family of lenses and this time it’s the 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art lens for both Sony E-mount and L mount.

The lens is expected to ship in late February 2023 (Feb 24th according to B&H) and is priced at a $849 in the US and £849.00 in the UK.

I checked B&H, they have 34 listings for 50mm E mount lenses. Some of those are their kits, like when they add a filter or something, but...yeesh!

The continued popularity of the "standard" 50mm lens is surprising, but I suppose I must not represent the norm. I find it the least useful focal length and rarely shoot my 24-70 at or near 50mm. I also don't understand the appeal of a fixed 50mm even for the large aperture. If you need the aperture for astro it seems you would want a wider focal length and if you need the aperture for portrait it seems you would want a narrower focal length. However they continue to make 50mm lenses for all brands (including the $6K Nikon Noct f0.95), so obviously it has broad appeal and there is something I am not getting (which I freely admit). Maybe it's popular with commercial photographers and street photographers?

I think it just goes back to the 'normal' FL. 50 on 35mm film is the same FOV as the naked eye...ish...

I don't own an E-mount 50. These days I prefer a 35 for the shots I would've used a 50 in the past.

I used to have a Minolta 50mm 1.8 that was truly epic, probably one of the sharpest lenses ever made. I reckon you could find one for £40 these days.

Many people don't realize that the 'G' (Gold) designation for lenses started with Minolta.

No it wasn't, and it was actually a 1.4, not 1.8, I've just looked at my old archive. Anyway, they are around $50 and highly rated by Mr Rockwell, if you like his opinions.

Mr. Rockwell can be a bit grating, but the proof is in the pudding. Anyone who doubts his knowledge need only look at his results.

For the answer to the question of do I need to carry a 50mm Prime, I have to love Mark Galer's answer to that question. His standard Primes that he carries include a 35mm and an 85mm. He says, "If I need a 50mm, I just take one step backwards or one step forward if I have a 35mm or 85mm installed."

That sounds good to me.

one more to come also sony announce 50mm f1.4 this week as well ,unbelievable when i got into sony only a handful of options the ziess planner overly pricey like £1400 ,the samyang 50mm f1.4 ver 1 the sony 55mm f1.8 which is not a 50 but close or the sigma 50mm f1.4 dg hm which i chose as my 50mm but so heavy and big with slow af i swapped out ,now the choices are limitless we must have at least 8 lenses for e mount at 50mm with Af god knows how many if you add manual lenses ,still i forgot the 50mm f2.8 macro also .l i will probably get the samyang 50mm f1.4 ver 2 ,cheaper lighter and near as good as others costing x2 or 3x as much. if i get another 50mm ,

Sigma have announced a 50mm f2 contemporary lens this will take sonys 50mm line up to 15 autofocus 50mm lenses for what is really just a standard view ,i hope we do not see anymore 50mm prime lenses for at least 10 years ,now can we have some specialist lenses 300mm f4 ,400mmf4 ,500mm f4 ,tamrons patented 400-800 f6.5 would be special ,600mm f5.6 180mm f4 macro ,200-450 mm f4.5 ,some lenses with built in t/c olympus and nikon can do it .
