I recently bought a Sony A7R VI and noticed that the body gets surprisingly warm after just 5-10 minutes of use, even when I'm only going through the menus and customizing settings. Have any other A7R VI owners experienced this? Is it considered normal, because I have never had this with my older sony models. Considering returning it the avoid having a bad copy...

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello ABPhoto & welcome!

While I don't have the A7RVI, I do know it has a new/larger battery (capacity of 20.9Wh, a 27% increase over the capacity of the other Z-type batteries), so I wouldn't be too concerned if it gets a bit warm. My A1II (and almost all of my other cameras) can get quite toasty - not a concern unless stuff starts to fail or go sideways.

Since it gets warm so quickly, can you go to a local camera shop and "play" with one for a few minutes as if you are going to buy it and see if that one does the same thing? I would agree with Craig that my A1II does get warm too. Last week I was shooting sports on a hot day and I really had to work at keeping the camera in the shade and/or turning it off when possible.

I've had a camera body get fairly warm while shooting long bursts at high speeds to CFexpressA memory cards (are you using CFeA or SD cards?)

I wouldn't expect it to get very warm if I was wandering through the menus and doing setup. I admit that setting up the A7RVI does involve a fair bit of menu wandering - I set up two custom modes on mine, and there are a squllion settings to go through (love being able to name the modes!!)

It might get warmer if you had it on a USB-C power connection - it would mean you were charging the battery and powering the camera at once. I did a quick check on the battery when I unpacked it (it was 11% charged), then put the battery in the charger. One of the few things I set before putting the battery in the charger was the setting of C3 in image review mode - it should be Rating, not Lock!

Still waiting for my second (and third) battery - Sony is taking a while to get the batteries to Australia.
