The first three of these were shot on the A1-II with the 300mm GM + 2x TC wide open at f/5.6 - been a while since I took this on an excursion. It was fairly overcast, and not too warm.

A duck on the hippo pond - 600mm, f/5.6, 1/2000. ISO 1250

this is the full frame - 600mm, f/5.6, 1/2000. ISO 1000 - this is the matriarch of the pride.

Obviously the fastest land predator, busy absorbing solar energy. 600mm. f/5.6, 1/2000, ISO 800

Anyone telling you "lions can't climb trees!" is badly mistaken. This lion is over 4m off the ground.

Shot with the 300m GM without a TC - 300mm, f/2.8, 1/2000, ISO 125 on the A1 II.

Oh WOW !!!
I just got my 300mm f/2.8 yesterday and I'm so glad to see such results with the 2x TC, because with the 200-600mm G it was unusable !

I can't wait to go out with this combo.

Agreed, after trying it, the 2x on the 200-600 is not a combination I'd repeat.

The 300 GM, on the other hand, was expressly designed to work well with both teleconverters - the lens designers were given a requirement of supporting teleconverters well, and they met that goal.

Hi ST, wonderful photos! I have decided to sell my 100-400 GM and 200-600 G and purchase the 300mm GM along with the 2.0 TC, I already own the 1.4. I want a lightweight setup for my 2-5 mile walks and based on what I read and see here looks like the way to go. Thanks!

OK, I took the 300GM out on a bouncy jolting bus through the savannah area of Werribee Zoo. First observation - the IBIS + OSS is genuinely effective at neutralising the bumps and jolts.

This is with the 2x teleconverter - you know, the one that people slam as decreasing image quality? There was mention in the 300GM announcement about it waking well with the teleeconverters. I had to try it, right?

This was shot at f/5.6 (wide open with the TC) ISO 800 1/2000 at an effective focal length of 600mm.

This combination is just a tad lighter than the 600 GM (1.67kg instead of 3kg). Also lighter than the 200-600 G (2.1kg), and f/5.6 instead of f/6.3, but lacking the zoom. I'm getting old enough that I'm struggling a bit with the 200-600 (weight and length) - no such problems with this.

Full frame as shot. No denoise. no output sharpening.

Note that they do not have a skin condition - they were in a mud wallow earlier, and clearly enjoyed it. These are Southern "White" rhinos.

Your photographs are excellent. I shoot from a wheelchair, which makes it a little easier to use the large telephoto lenses. I have the 400-800, 200-600, and 70-200, and I also have both the 2x and 1x teleconverters.

First of all, the idea that photographs are less sharp or too soft when taken with a telephoto lens is BS. I've taken many photographs, and although I'm disabled, my eyesight is very good, so I can tell a soft photograph. The only soft photographs I get are when I've made a mistake.

I cannot see the point of spending the amount of money that large primes cost when you're stuck at one focal length. It seems quite ridiculous to me, but I'm certain they take good photographs. They're Sony lenses, after all, but it's just a load of doodoo to suggest that zooms take inferior photographs.
