Mother and calf about 50m off the beach this afternoon. Photos from around 450m away and pretty windy. Motivation to buy a longer lens than my 300mm which would have helped quality. Did not have time to get down to the beach to be closer, but suspect angle for photos would have been harder at same level as the water. Favourite is the last one — calf gliding over the mother’s back.

I love to photograph whales and dolphins but they are so difficult when you don't know where they are surfacing.
Yep, definitely need the 200-600mm for whales. But if you're in a boat dolphins often come in too close though!

Never seen a Whale and it is on my wish list. Well done.

Thanks Ralph. Very few whales in Mildura I guess. I was just lucky with this; mentioned on the news that they have come close to shore to rest. All other times I’ve only seen a puff of water somewhere out to sea, so reckon a boat trip needed in the right season to reliably get some shots.

Closest things to whale are at the pool in Summer if you get what I mean.
