I ordered this lens as I want to do a comparison for the blog with the GM version. Although I thought it was coming to the UK in September so I was a little shocked when I received a shipping notification from Wex last week! I've only played with it a little so far. It's certainly a nice compact lens compared to its bigger GM brother, well at least until you zoom in. AF is very nippy even with the 2x attached but I haven't tested it extensively yet. Luckily the sun came out briefly on the day that it arrived so I managed to grab a few shots in the garden, some with the 2x attached. These are all out of camera JPEGs although I was using the VV Creative Look in-camera for a little more punch to the colours. Some cropping as well. Shot handheld.

How does the size of it compare to the 24-70mm GMII?
The 24-200 F4 II is 82.2 x 149.0 mm but extends to around 205mm. The 24-70 GM II is 87.8 x 119.9mm but extends to 158.4mm. So it's still bigger than the 24-70. I don't own the 24-70 so can't do any images comparisons I'm afraid Clint.

The outer element mushrooms out on the 24-70MM which gives it a few more millimetres diameter at that spot. I guess that's why I would just like to know how they compare in the real world.

Very nice Timothy, certainly looks like the macro factor is a success...I was considering this lens until i read about your post on the x2 teleconverter with the mkii f2.8 lens.

I haven't ordered it yet and may hold off until I hear more from your experience...
Cheers

Brian.

If you are considering the 70-200 F2.8 GM II then the new 70-200 F4 G II could certainly be an alternative lower cost option. It will be a few weeks before I get chance to compare them properly but I don't think either lens will disappoint when it comes to sharpness and autofocus speed. The extra stop with the GM is very useful if you are shooting in low light though, especially if you then add the 2x. I prefer the handling of the GM because of the internal zoom design, if you are zooming in and out a lot then this is definitely a killer feature and you are also less likely to be sucking in dust. For a travel lens however the more compact F4 is definitely the one that I would be packing.

Thanks Timothy,

A lot of my landscape is in low light so hence my preference for the GM.

Yeah I will be zooming a lot also .

Cheers
