This afternoon I saw and photographed a Barred Owl in the wild for the first time. Bonus was seeing a pair of owlets in the nest box.

Barred Owl - where there is a Owlet, there is a parent not far away. In this case almost eye level and about 20 yards away. Image taken in Port Charlotte FL on April 15, 2024 Camera: Sony a7Rv + FE 400mm f/2.4 GM

Killdeer - a very common bird in the US , yet so colorful. The Killdeer’s broken-wing act leads predators away from a nest, but doesn’t keep cows or horses from stepping on eggs. To guard against large hoofed animals, the Killdeer uses a quite different display, fluffing itself up, displaying its tail over its head, and running at the beast to attempt to make it change its path. New neighbors moving in! They're building their new home (nest) right now..... A few days ago I had seen a pair of doves when they paid a brief visit to my deck, and at the time I wondered if they were scouting around for a location for their new nest..... Guess I was right! I had been out on the deck shooting something else and out of the corner of my eye saw a bird flying nearby and landing somewhere near the boardwalk just below me, so I swung the camera downward for a better look..... Took several shots of this guy, as he briefly perched on one of the ropes along the boardwalk, although the 200-600mm with a 1.4 TC was a bit more reach than was really necessary! He was all set with his mouthful of nesting material, graciously posed for me, and then flew off.....

Drake (male) Wood Duck - is one of the most colorful water birds. Males are iridescent green and chestnut, with ornate patterns on almost every feather, while the elegant female has a delicate white pattern around her eye and a distinctive profile. These birds inhabit wooded swamps, where their nests are in holes up in trees or in the nest boxes around lake margins. These are one of a few duck species that have strong claws to perch on branches and grip bark.
