Very cool! I mean...very Coot!

Started the long process of processing the images from my recent Costa Rica trip.

Purple Gallinule - is probably one of the most colorful birds we have in SW Florida . Camera: Sony a7Rv + FE 600mm F/2.8 GM Images taken on March 19, 2024 in Lee County, FL.

Some fun facts -

Purple Gallinule pairs often build four different nests! However, they only choose one to nest in. It’s not known why they do this but those extra empty nests might act as decoys to distract predators from the real one.

Purple Gallinule babies have a small claw on the front part of each wing. This adaptation helps them hold onto and move through their dense marsh grass home.

Nice. It's basically a more colourful version of our Moorhen (which I called Moron, as they are spectacularly dumb)

Chestnut Backed Thrush, taken at Thrigby Hall Gardens, so captive. I was really pleased with how this came out given the 6400k ISO. I didn't have to denoise much with it.

American Flamingo - In 2023, Hurricane Idalia brought high winds and flamingos. Documented sightings across the eastern United States, with records from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, as far north as Ohio and Pennsylvania, and as far northwest as Wisconsin. Hopefully they'll stay in Florida for good! Inage captured in SW Florida. Camera: Sony a7Rv + FE 600mm f/4 GM ISO 1250 f/6.3 1/3200 AWB.

Green Heron - are one of the few species of bird known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use insects, or other items for bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water to lure fish. Image taken in SW Florida on March 25, 2025 Camera: Sony a7Rv + FE 600mm f/4 FM ISO 800 f/5.6 1/3200 AWB

A surprise and unexpected visitor to my garden feeders today, a pair of Siskin, of which this is the male. Beautiful birds, a first for my garden. That's species 26 for the year, quite remarkable really.
